MUNICH ELECTRIFICATION RELEASES NEW PRODUCT BATTERY MANAGEMENT DISCONNECT UNIT (BMDU)

PRESS RELEASE

Munich, May 20, 2026 – Munich Electrification is proud to introduce its innovative Battery Management Disconnect Unit (BMDU), a highly integrated solution designed to solve the core challenges of reliability, cost, and complexity in the electric commercial and heavy-duty vehicle market. The BMDU combines the essential components of a modern battery management system into a single, space-efficient unit, offering a “first-class” upgrade for electric vehicle battery systems.

Munich Electrifications Battery Management Disconnect Unit (BMDU) is a highly integrated, plug-and-play solution designed specifically for the heavy-duty electric vehicle market. We’ve combined BMS, contactors, fuses, pre-charge and current sensing into a single module.

The Challenge: The commercial electric vehicle sector faces immense pressure to offer cost-effective solutions without compromising on maximum vehicle uptime and operational reliability, as system failures lead to costly downtime. Traditional battery management systems (BMS) consist of numerous separate components, which increases assembly complexity, cost and potential points of failure.

The Solution: Munich Electrification’s BMDU is an all-in-one solution that integrates the Battery Management Unit (BMU), dual-pole HV contactor with switching device with integrated, repeatable, short circuit breaking capability functionality, a dual shunt current sensor, a precharge circuit, wiring harnesses, and a cooling interface into a single, compact component ready for vehicle integration.

Performance built to last

The BMDU offers a range of additional benefits that enhance performance and reduce overhead. The integrated design leads to significant cost reductions and simplifies the manufacturing process by streamlining assembly. Its compact footprint creates valuable space efficiency within the vehicle architecture.

The BMDU is built for the future. Its busbars are designed to maximize contact with the thermal interface, enhancing heat removal. This superior thermal management allows for advancements into challenging scenarios such as megawatt charging, ensuring that vehicles equipped with the BMDU are prepared for the next generation of charging technology. Built on ME’s proven BMS platform, the BMDU meets the highest safety standards, with critical safety features rated up to ASIL D.

For commercial fleet operators, vehicle availability is paramount. The Munich Electrification BMDU is specifically engineered to satisfy the key needs of commercial vehicle BMS by providing the highest levels of reliability. The system ensures continuous operation through intelligent design features, including a patent-pending dynamic main controller system that maintains functionality even if a failure occurs in a single battery pack, and resettable short-circuit interruption that keeps the vehicle running after a fault in the high-voltage system. By replacing a complex network of individual parts with one robust unit, the BMDU minimizes potential failure points and simplifies the entire battery design.

"The commercial vehicle industry demands high quality and best reliability, our answer is the BMDU, an extremely robust product assuring maximum availability." said Dr. Uwe Wiedemann, Managing Director at Munich Electrification. "Our BMDU is engineered to be the heart of the battery system - a single, intelligent unit that directly addresses these needs. By integrating critical functions, we not only enhance reliability but also provide our customers with a clear path to simpler assembly, lower costs, and future-proof performance."

Key features include:

  • ASIL rated HV current sensing, HV disconnect and thermal event detection

  • Compatible with large multi-string systems including intelligent main control strategies
