Interview with Christoph Kukral - Chief Customer Officer

Hi Christoph, thank you for joining us today! Please tell us a bit more about you and your role at Munich Electrification.

I am one of the old hands at Munich Electrification. I joined more than 5 years ago after having worked with batteries for almost a decade. My background is mechanical engineering and my first touchpoints with batteries have been mechanical integration and cooling systems for automotive high voltage batteries at a German OEM. After that I changed to low voltage Lithium-Ion batteries where I have been responsible for the development of the whole system, which is now used in various car projects within the Volkswagen Group. Here at ME, I am now leading the Customer Office which consists of Sales and Business Development as well as Program Management. In the end it steers the projects through the whole evolution up to series maturity, from the first customer contact up to the series release.

Why is technological leadership such a core value for our company? What impact does it have on our culture and vision?

Technological leadership isn't just about staying ahead; it's fundamental to our survival and success in the highly competitive industry. We recognize that competing solely on price against larger players is unsustainable. Therefore, our core value of technological leadership is our strategic imperative – to consistently deliver superior, innovative solutions that provide a distinct competitive advantage for both ME and our customers. This commitment permeates our company culture, fostering a mindset of continuous learning, experimentation, and a drive to push boundaries. Our goal is to be the recognized leader in battery management systems, empowering the electrification revolution through groundbreaking technology.

How would you define the difference between being a tech leader and a follower?

The distinction is obvious: tech leaders are the architects of the future, while followers are the builders who follow existing blueprints. Leaders proactively identify unmet needs and new challenges, then pioneer novel solutions that redefine what's possible. They are the relentless challengers of the status quo, driven by the desire to create what hasn't existed before. Followers, on the other hand, adapt and replicate existing solutions, often making incremental improvements. Their innovation is based on imitation, while a pioneer's innovation breaks completely new ground.

How does this distinction affect our approach to innovation?

Being a technological leader means our approach to innovation goes beyond simply fulfilling stated requirements. We understand that true innovation lies in anticipating and addressing the underlying needs of our customers, even those they may not yet fully articulate. This requires a deep understanding of their challenges and a proactive approach to identifying future pain points. We don't just listen to what customers say; we delve deeper through putting ourselves in their place to uncover their true needs and develop groundbreaking solutions that truly move the industry forward.

How does prioritizing technological leadership benefit our clients, customers, partners, or even our internal teams?

Prioritizing technological leadership creates a ripple effect of benefits for all our stakeholders:

We also champion external engagement through our open policy on attending tech conferences and collaborating with external partners. To further incentivize innovation, we offer a special bonus to employees for patent applications, recognizing the value of their inventive contributions, regardless of the final outcome.

Can you talk about the role of collaboration, both within our teams and with external partners, in driving technological leadership?

Collaboration is not just important at Munich Electrification – it's the lifeblood of our technological leadership. Internally, we cultivate an exceptionally open and supportive atmosphere where knowledge sharing is paramount. Our 'ask anyone' culture breaks down silos and fosters a collective problem-solving environment, accelerating the development and refinement of innovative ideas. Externally, we forge deep, strategic partnerships with suppliers, customers, and other key players that extend beyond transactional relationships. These collaborations provide invaluable insights, diverse perspectives, and shared expertise, enabling us to develop truly tailored solutions and build a more resilient ecosystem that benefits everyone involved.

Are there specific departments or teams within the company that play a critical role in pushing our technology forward?

While technological leadership is a company-wide endeavor, certain departments play a particularly pivotal role in driving our advancements. Naturally, our Hardware and Software Development teams are at the forefront, conceiving and creating the groundbreaking technologies that define our leadership. However, the contributions of other departments are equally vital. Our Industrialization and Operations teams are crucial in implementing the latest technological trends to optimize our production processes for efficiency and scalability. Furthermore, our Product Management team acts as the bridge between Munich Electrification and the market, providing invaluable insights into customer needs and emerging trends that directly fuel our innovation pipeline.

What specific training, tools, or initiatives do we provide to employees to encourage them to develop a tech-forward mindset?

We heavily invest in our people through comprehensive training programs, encompassing both external courses led by industry experts and internal knowledge-sharing initiatives. Fostering an open atmosphere where individuals feel empowered to exchange ideas freely and where new approaches are not only welcomed but actively appreciated is crucial. Technological breakthroughs often emerge from unexpected places, so creating a culture that values curiosity and diverse perspectives is a fundamental step towards becoming a true leader in your field.

What inspired you personally to work for a company that values technological leadership?

What personally drew me to Munich Electrification was the compelling opportunity to be an integral part of building something significant. Unlike larger corporations where individual contributions can feel diluted, here there's a tangible sense of ownership and impact. You can directly witness the results of your work and contribute meaningfully to the company's trajectory. This, coupled with the chance to collaborate with a team of exceptionally talented and passionate colleagues who are all driven by the pursuit of technological excellence, makes Munich Electrification a truly inspiring place to work.

Can you share a moment when you felt proud to work for a company that’s leading in technology?

There are several moments that have filled me with pride working at Munich Electrification. One particularly rewarding experience is getting nominated for a project where the competition was much larger companies compared to us with a way bigger capital backing, both monetary and headcount wise. This happened not only once - the driver for the decisions pro ME was the belief in our technical capabilities and agility to translate ideas into actual products which meet the market requirements.

Also, seeing talented individuals who have directly experienced our products or our collaborative approach apply to join our team. This speaks volumes about the value and impact we create. Additionally, receiving recognition through supplier awards validates our commitment to excellence and innovation. Finally, engaging with industry experts at fairs and conferences and receiving positive feedback on our technological advancements reinforces our position as a leader and highlights the significant contributions we are making to the field.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR TIME AND INSIGHTS, CHRISTOPH!
